Question:

What kind of container do you use to keep compost scraps in the freezer?

We've started a composting endeavour at work this summer. We're keeping a rubbermaid tote box (it's about 6 or 8 litres I guess) in our freezer to keep the scraps until they can be brought upstairs to the roof where the compost bin is. Unfortunately though, I'm not really enjoying how the freezer (and ergo my lunch bag, lunch and our ice cream treats) smell like garbage. I'm not sure how many boxes of baking soda it wold take to reign that in. It's really pretty unappetizing...

I'm wondering if there's something that might be more efficient at keeping the odours better contained? (Like maybe something with a seal... lock 'n lock box perhaps?)

What do you use?

Thanks!

  1. I use ice creme pail with lid and don't bother freezing.

  2. I kept breaking the container lids when they froze, so just use a heavy duty resealable bag, like the freezer bags.  You can double them for extra smell protection, but frankly once something is frozen, it hardly smells.

  3. We use a plastic container with a lid that snaps on tight.  I really don't think it should be smelling so bad if it's in the freezer.  Maybe it needs to be emptied more often.

  4. In the freezer it shouldn't smell. Start over by cleaning it up and deodorizing with a single box of baking soda. Use a sealed container for compost and everything should be fine. If your lunch, etc. stink then I suspect someone is leaving stuff in the refrigerator rather than disposing of it accordingly.

  5. zip lock plastic freezer bag

  6. I use a 5 gallon bucket each time I cook or whatever else, then I take it out and dump it in the composter. unless you're letting it sit and rot it shouldn't smell at all, freezer or not (provided you're putting the right stuff in it, greens, browns, no meat, etc.) it should just smell like veggie scraps and such. I would think the reason is it's smelly is that you're putting meat scraps or grease in it and they're getting rancid, maybe you should do a little research on what to put in it. anything frozen shouldn't stink anyway, because it's frozen, but, I don't see the point in putting it in the freezer. it can't be that much trouble to empty it each day.
