  1. Depends on the types of foods you want to cook.  Any cook book is useful if it offers things you will eat.  This site offers a very good selection:

  2. For a beginner's cook book, I recommend one with pictures and simple, straight forward recipes.

For example, Betty Crocker, Better Homes and Garden and Good Housekeeping.  Also, Sunset magazine publishes cookbooks that are pretty good.

Big books like "The Joy of Cooking" or "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" contain a lot of recipes, but not many photos... which I think is a detriment to beginning cooks.

  3. A few recommendations:

-The Joy of Cooking is a great option; covers everything.

-If you're trying to watch what you eat relative to health and weight control, Dr. Oz "You- On a Diet" has some very good recipes that are nutritionally sound, and actually taste like something you'd want to eat.

-If you want to really learn, then Michael Ruhlman's "The Elements of Cooking" explains things, defines commonly used terms, and has some suggestions that are actually practical, useful, and will make you a better cook.

    Good luck!

  4. The Joy Of Cooking is a great one.

  5. Good Housekeeping covers everything you could ever want to make.
