Even thouth it is a 2 stroke, it still has crankcase oil in it. There is a dipstick and a drain plug.

  1. First, the Kawasaki JS300 is a 2 cycle engine powered stand up PWC.  That means it runs on mixed gas, even if it doesn't require it to be pre-mixed.  Most people prefer to premix instead of depending on the oil injection since this can fail without warning.

Second, that is NOT crankcase oil, it is 2 cycle oil which gets pumped into the engine as needed.  Crankcase oil permentantly stays in the engine, 2 cycle oil does not.

I ran a 1992 Kawasaki 550 standup for 3 years, I know plenty enough on how these things work.  Mine however did not use oil injection or oil pump system.  I'm glad it did not.

The 1988 model shows an oil pump for injecting 2 cycle oil into the crankcase.  The dipstick probably shows you the amount of 2 cycle oil left in the oil tank.  As for the drain plug, this could be several possibilities, so answering this would be very difficult without a picture of it.

  2. Usually you can use 10w30 oil, and in most cases,it is what it should call for! If the engine is a two stroke engine, this is a mixed oil engine, meaning that the oil and gas are mixed in the gas tank. Having a crancase and dipstick doesn't mean squat about the engine. So telling you that it doesn't would be leading you the wrong. It is for lubrication of other moving parts, and should be checked regularly. Jet skis have many moving parts, and the jets need oiled to avoid overheating. Try reading your owners manual, and this may help you to understand.

  3. It doesn't have crankcase oil.

Jet skis have sealed main bearings.  If you don't believe me, phone your local friendly Kawasaki dealer.

  4. It has an automatic oil mixing system.

It'll take an oil formulated for two-stroke watercooled engines.

What I don't know is whether kawa recommends a particular oil for this particular engine.  If not, you can just look for the "TCW3" certification.

  5. Sure it has a crankcase, it has a crankshaft...

I don't know why it should have a dipstick tho since the crankcase in 2 stroke-cycle engines is used to transfer fuel/oil  mixture into the combustion chamber.

Maybe it's to check for water level or something.  What does the user manual say about it?

  6. I am sorry to inform you, but it does not have crankcase oil (other than what comes from the fuel mix).

                 BUT................

It does use motor oil as well!

There is a dipstick on the magneto cover, and that is for motor oil. This is to lube the starter gears. The 300 is the only Kawasaki that uses oil in the mag case. It does not lube the crankcase though, it is sealed. It should also never get "low" but is reccommended to be changed at 100 hour intervals.

The manual reccomends SE or SF 10W-40W, 10W-50W, 20W-40W, or 20W-50W.

I can't remember the number of 440's 550's, 650's and more that have come into my shop with oil in the mag case! or the 300's that have come in without oil!

You ought to get ahold of a maintenance manual. It will help keep your 300 running as long as possible. They are fun, but as I have aged and gotten fatter, I have trouble getting on one!

Here is a tip for you though, instead of buying the YB16 motorcycle battery, I run lawn and garden batteries in most of my Kawasakis. They fit all the stand-ups, and the X2, and many of the STS's and such. The cost less, and last longer as well.
