  1. I prefer the plastic ones.  They are nice and snug like a den. Dogs love them. They also clean up nicely and can be thoroughly sanitized when needed.

I keep one on the side of my bed for either my Cocker in the winter of whatever puppy I happen to be taking care of at the moment. Currently it's a dog that looks part Beagle. I've used it for dozens of dogs that have passed through my doors.

The crate should always be inside for you dog.  After puppy training your dog will see the crate as his special place.

Dogs are part of the family. They should live inside with you. They should be inside when you aren't home and at night.

Buy the size crate your dog will need as an adult. Large should be best.

Put cardboard boxes or other things in it to, block off part and make it smaller while your dog grows into it. I assume you don't want to buy 3 or 4 crates as your dog grows.

Buy a dog house for the yard.

PS  I might be the cat lady, but I currently am taking care of 5 dogs.

  2. I have the metal crate for my dogs. They didn't like the enclosed feeling of the plastic crates that you cant see out as much. Plus they stand up more if the dog is a chewer. Go to PetSmart or Petco and look at their crates. They typically have a size and even breed recommendations on them. Get the size recommended for a Beagle. Most of the metal ones even have dividers where you can make the area smaller for now and then gradually give them more space as they grow. This helps with potty training.

    Here is my recommendation

There is even a size guide at the bottom of the page. They recommed a 36" x 24" x 27" for a Beagle.

    Hope this helps!
