It is not a specific species.  It is an idealized animal.  Much the same as Disney's penguins.

I disagree in the value many place on this story.  Especially when a child does mature.  Then that person realizes that crickets are nothing like humans and that it all was a very bad lie.  Remember, the publishers goal is to make money, not pass on enduring social values.  You wanna write about children expressing themselves, then use children, not animals.
