  1. In cross country the main thing is weight...cause you will be on them a while.

Do you want Full susp or hard tail?

Full susp will be a little slower - in sprints...but will be less tiring to your body over ling periods of riding....if you are going to ride for hours - get full susp. then you will be faster on it becuae you will be less fatiqued.

At $1,000  - not allot XC in full suspensions....(unless you buy online) under $1K. & Maybe you should consider a used bike.

or one of these - http://www.ibexbikes.com/Bikes/ASTA-COMP...

    http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/moto... - $799 - but 32 lbs...kinda heavy...for a XC bike.

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/moto... $999 30 lbs seems a little heavy...but for under $1,000 new - it;s just about the only choice in a full susp.

The Cheapest Specialized full susp $1300 list. http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel...

But if you want a hard tail there are plenty of choices.......

    http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/moto...  - $795 - 25-27 lbs stated weight.

and many others too - Specialized, Kona , haro, JAmis, Gary fisher etc...

Check out a Used HAro Sonix - I found one on ebay for around $600. it's around 28 lbs wth full susp. or the specialized - FSRxc Models.
