1) it is from a cucumber vine. small yellow flowers, broad leaves, crawling the ground. There is no central stalk or long stalky leaves like the squash we usually plant. We planted seeds on the assumption they were cucumber seeds. The baby ones hang off the vine like little baby cucumbers.
2) it smells like a cucumber, tastes like one. The inner seed area is only about a centimeter in diameter from the specimen shown snapped in two (bottom).
3) the deep furrowed hulls are really something else. The cross-section reveals a small green dot at the point of each flute. There is a darker ring about 1/2 a cm wide around the crosssection on the outside, then it goes pale, almost white, and there is a small section of seed in the middle. There are no prickles on the hull like your typical dark green cucumber.

the largest one weighs 7.6lbs. We have not cut it open (county fair material imo)
