What kind of database to use for simple matters?

Can anyone recommend some type of database that I can use for simple matters like websites and Microsoft Excel? A lot would probably recommend MySQL, but I'd like to use something which does not require a server or service to run. I guess that I will end up using text files ... but how?

  1. If it just needs to be simple and you have Office, use MS Access.
