  1. Actually, my antecedents have come before me, not my descendants, and for the last three generations, my mother, my maternal grandmother, and myself, we've all been teachers, so I apologize for correcting your terminology.  At age 55, this English composition teacher finds old habits hard to break.

First off, I'm of hardy, frontier American stock.  Most of my family came through the Cumberland Gap and within the space of two generations had crossed the country from the Carolinas and Kentucky into Texas where all four of my grandparents were born.  My mother's maternal grandfather immigrated to the United States from Canada.  His Irish Catholic parents cane to Ontario from County Donegal in Northern Ireland in 1820. Most of my Scottish ancestors (as in the Church of Scotland) immigrated between about 1750 and 1800.  They married farmers of English descent who had come to Virginia as early as the founding of Jamestown, although I also count as ancestors Palatine Germans, French Huguenots, and Dutch settlers from New Amsterdam.

  6. I think that you mean ancestral backgrounds.  Descendants are the people that come after you like children and grandchildren.  Ancestors are the ones that come before you.  With that said, my ancestral background is mostly Dutch.  I do have one line that goes back before that American Revolution.
