I have ridden dirt bikes all my life. I have mostly done enduro riding and I want to try a hillclimb competition. I don't have the right bike to do it. I have a four stroke 125 yamaha but it is pretty banged up and I don't think is has the power to make it up steep hills like the ones i want to attempt.

If you have done a hillclimb before can you tell me what type of bike i will need?

Give me a website if you know of any where i can look at new or used bikes for this type of riding.

THANKS FOR THE HELP!

  1. Oh, I really know, go to www.Kawasaki.com and get your self the KX250 it is a two stroke and has good power.

  2. CR500 2 stroker.

20 " over long swingarm, just for good measure.

  3. It is not necessarily the power of the bike that makes the difference although a 250 or 450 may be better.  All the hill climb bikes have longer swingarms on them so they can power uphill.  Apparently I have been told that there are places that you can get swingarms that are longer but I really cannot help you with that and many of the guys who do hillclimb actually get them made specifically for it.

Perhaps talk to someone who aready does this and they can then not only tell you the best bikes for hillclimb but tell you where you can get the swingarm and anything else necessary for doing hillclimb

  4. Here are some videos showing hillclimb competition.  You can see that the CR500 Honda and KX 500 Kawasaki are favorites.  4 stroke bikes also used but they are usually raced in a different class.

The CR500 and KX500 aren't being sold anymore, so you'll have to shop the used bike market.  On line options are cycletrader, craigslist, e-Bay and others.  Here is a listing for a CR500 that is race ready for hillclimbs.

You'll have to join a club or an association that sanctions/sponsers events to ride in the event.  AMA, as well as others, sponser hillclimb competition depending on where you live.

  5. Auburn really has no idea what it going on here...

Most hill climbers are special one off bikes with larger engines in them. If you want a serious hillclimber, you have to build one....

now, if you want to run in the stock class, stay away from the 4 strokes. Get something like a CR or KX 500 2 stroke.

then you will need to invest in a longer swingarm, some like 20 inches longer than stock, but thats really up to you....

  6. That is one sport I don't know a lot about. If it were me I would start by deciding what class I wanted to compete in. Go check out a couple of the competitions and feel out what classes seem to be better for new comers. You obviously don't want to cut your teeth on a nitro burning 1000cc monster. You would most likely find some bikes already set up for hill climbing for sale at the competition as well.

  7. a 450 4 stroke

  8. CR 500 2 stroke air cooled

  9. 2006 Honda 500AFX
