I have horrible neck pain almost daily, i also have really bad headaches almost daily. I have a hard bump in the back of my neck. I was wondering what kind of doctor I need to go to for them to check out my head and neck. Please help me out with this. The headaches and neck pain get so bad sometimes that I get nauseous. Ive already been to a chiropractor and they cant really do much about finding what the problem is.

  1. I would recommend starting with your primary care physician.  If you have already done that too then I would recommend a consultation with a neurologist (a doctor that diagnoses and treats diseases and disorders that relate to the nervous system such as the neck and head).

  2. I have a hard bump on the back of my neck as well. I'm no doctor, so don't take my word for gospel, but most neck bumps are just inflamed lymph nodes from previous infections. I've had mine for about 6 years. If you're very worried, ask your physician about a biopsy. They can be dangerous on the neck, though.  For head pain go to a neurologist. For neck pain I would recommend seeing an orthopedist . Also, ask your physician if you're experiencing migraines, which can cause nausea. Mine do. Ask about Topamax. Topamax is a good migraine medicine. You take it daily and it reduces your chances of getting headaches altogether. Supplement that with Excedrin Migraine when you feel a headache coming on and you should be golden.

  3. It would be best to start with your family doctor, who can evaluate you for the headaches and examine your neck and the bump you are talking about.  He will probably get an MRI of your neck and possibly one of your brain.  How long have the headaches been going on and how long have you had the bump.  Try to make a diary of your headaches--when they come, how long they last, location, associated symptoms such as nausea, visual disturbances, numbness, weakness, ringing in ears, shooting pain, etc..  The doctor will need to know this.

After you see your family doctor, he can refer you to a neurologist for further evaluation of the headaches, but it will save money to have your family doctor at least get an MRI of the neck first so that you can take it with you.

  4. I would suggest you go to a neurologist. They will need to do X-rays and/or MRI's to see what is causing both the headaches and the neck pain.

    Good luck,

    Tex

  5. A very good primary or general MD who will probably refer you to a neurologist. Stay away from chiropractors

  6. neurologist would be the one you should go to. I would suggest you to goto a facility with digital motion X-ray where they can observe your neck through multiple x-rays while its in the position when it really gives you problem. That way, the exact problem can be identified.
