Also when is the best time to buy a formal dress? Is the best time now...before prom season sets in? Also what colors are appropriate?

  1. You will have a great time on your cruise!  I love cruising.  On the formal nights, you will see all types of dresses, from really fancy (ball gowns) to women wearing skirts and a nice blouse.  Whatever you buy, you can't go wrong.

It does tend to get cold on a ship, so you may want to buy a dress with a jacket or bring a shual to keep you warm.  As for the color, anything goes.  Some women wear black  and others wear bright colors.

You can go dress shopping any time.  Right after prom, they may have more sales because they want to get rid of their extra dresses, but I find the department stores always has dresses on sale.

    Have fun!

  2. The formal nights on cruise ships are REQUESTED attire rather than a REQUIRED attire.  BUT most people do dress up and you will see ladies in all types of attire from long floor length gown to knee length party dresses and some who don't go all out just wear their best "Sunday church attire".  Regardless, whatever you wear you will not stand out among all of the variety of attire that you will see. In addition, some women wear black or dark colors but others wear red, beige, or whatever color they want.  So there is no set protocol that you have to have black or a dark color.  My wife has two dress that she alternates on cruises, one red, another black.

As for the best time, it probably depends more on what type stores you have in your city, what they normally have and how much you want to spend.  You may need to shop around a bunch of stores to see what they have that you like and is in your size.  I suggest starting now with your shopping and as you do ask the sales people when they get and have the best variety and sizes.  If you have high end stores in your area like  Sak's and Neiman Marcus you will probably be able to find a gown or party dress almost any time.  But stores like Dillards and Macys may have a smaller supply on hand.

  3. You could shop now for what people got for New Years, any cocktail dress is great for formal night

  4. cockdail dress usually.  only old ladies wear long gowns.  i suggest a nice plain little black dress, which can be made fancier looking with a shawl with bangles or such (usually sold on the ships).  that way you can wear it more than once.

  5. after prom season they go on sale

  6. I'd just dig out what you wore last time you went to a wedding.

There are usually 2 formal nights. The first one being with the captain's gala, which is also formal. One night is casual, where you actually CAN wear shorts and tee shirts to the dining room. Be sure to read your daily newsletter each evening to know everything that's going on. Carnival Capers, Princess Platter, whatever.

    Oh, enjoy the towel animals!!!

  7. It doesnt have to be formal.... A nice classy dress will work just fine too..
