Hi all, I am mounting my TV (42") this weekend and I dont know what kind of drill I need. Is a corded drill ok? If not, should I get 12v, 14v, 18v? I didnt want to spend a ton of money on a drill that Im going to use for only 4 bolts. Thanks for the help.

  1. yes a corded will work fine,a 14 volt is a good choic, but there is a new 18 volt really light weight, from makita

  2. If you don't have a drill now, you probably don't need to buy one.

I suggest asking a friend. Or maybe rental. If you DO need one, I suggest buying a good one. 18v is great. Craftsman brand works great for me. Corded will be cheaper but less useful since you need a plug where ever you are.

  3. My drill broke when I was hanging my 32" on the wall. I did the job with a wrench. You dont need a drill. After a Year that thing is still hanging with no problems.

You jsut need to make sure you are putting the screws in the middle of the stud on the wall! Just make a started up hole with whatever drill you have and if ur drill doesnt have enough juice for the big bolt then use your human strenght!

  4. In addition to what the guys mentioned above you also want to make sure the drill bit you use is not larger than the smallest diameter on the s***w. I know it sounds silly and obvious but it only takes one time to ruin your day. The last thing you want is a bunch of empty holes in your walls. or a tv to fall off your wall.

The mounting kit should tell you what size is ideal for the s***w.

  5. Corded is OK, but the cord can be a pain. If you have one go ahead and use it. If not rent an 18V cordless.

I don't know what you are drilling into, but if wood a standard drill is no problem. If stone or concrete you need a hammer drill and a masonry bit. You also need to trickle water into the hole to cool the bit.

May seem obvious, but don't mount only on drywall (although you could get away with the lower holes being into drywall, the upper ones should be into the studs). Follow directions with the mount for hole size.

Again, may be obvious, but mounting the TV is a two person job, don't try to do by yourself.

  6. any drill should work if you can get in the stud. I have a little cheap cordless 7.2 for in my house it works great and go's rite in studs.
