So I bought a baby dwarf hamster yesterday..he has a grayish coat with a slightly lighter gray belly. There is a faint black stripe down its back. The store owner said he was Siberian, but I googled Siberian hamsters and they seem to have a really noticeable white belly. Anyone know what he is?

  1. Campbells dwarfs and Winter white dwarfs (the grey type called sapphire) are so similar in their looks that it takes some effort to differentiate the two. Unfortunately, pet shops with not much experience in hamsters tend to confuse the two. Siberian is another name for winter white dwarfs. The following site gives you an idea to differentiate the two -

Compare your hamster with the photos on the above site to find out which one he is. My guess it probably he is a campbell since siberian ones have brighter undersides. Also winter whites have three streaks - one on the middle of their back and two on the sides.

  2. From the discription you gave. It sounds like a Chinese Dwarf Hamster. I own one and thats what he looks like. Here are some pics of mine. Is it like this?
