Question:

What kind of dye works best on denim?

I had a nosebleed the other day and some of the blood got on my favorite pair of jeans. I put them in the washer and soaked them right after it happened but there are still a few light stains. These are my absolute favorite jeans so I really want to "fix" them somehow.

They're a light wash so I was wondering if it will work to use fabric dye that is a slightly darker shade to cover the stain. I know about the Rit brand but I'm not sure if that will work. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on what type of dye would work best on denim? Thanks.

  1. Before you decide to dye them, really try to get the stain out. I use Oxiclean on many stains and it works great...but don't leave it on too long, or some fabrics will lighten. The problem with dying a stain is that it is kind of like colouring over orange marker with purple marker...somehow, you will always see the stain underneath the purple ink. Because dye is transparent, it will always reveal any discolouration underneath.

I've used Ritt on natural fibres with wonderful results. Just follow the directions carefully and make sure that whatever method you use, that the garment has enough space to move freely in the dye bath: otherwise, you end up with patchy, blotchy results.

I have never had superior results with Tintex dyes...they seem to wash out after only a few washes.

Again, try to get the stain out first. Maybe even take it to a dry cleaners...it may cost a bit, but they are your favourite pair and the results will probably be better than if you dye them.

    Good luck!
