  1. I'll lay out three levels of guitars that are good for beginners, from least to most expensive:

The absolute best electric guitar for a beginner is one you can get for free. ;)  If you know somebody who can lend you one they don't use often, that's your best bet.  A LOT of people begin playing but don't continue, and end up wasting a lot of money.

Next, you should consider one of: Squire strat, Epiphone Les Paul Special II, Epiphone SG Special, Ibanez IJX30, Ibanez IJX121.  All of these can be gotten in "starter packs" that include an amp and some other goodies ranging from $199-$299, or $100-200 by themselves.

You can find them even cheaper and in abundance on Craigslist.org.

If, and only if you're certain you will continue to play, here are some recommendations that you won't outgrow as quickly: Fender stratocaster (Made-in-Mexico), Epiphone Les Paul standard, Epiphone SG, Ibanez RG2EX1, Jackson DXMG Dinky.  They range from $250-450.
