  1. Hybrids use a gasoline engine and a small electric engine. They are quite fuel efficient.

They get anywhere between 45 mpg and 80+, though you'll only get that much in city driving where the constant stopping or idling lets the car use mostly electric.

Some people aftermarket their hybrids with solar panels, extra batteries or plug in features to get even more mileage

  2. fossil fuel and electricity via the car battery

  3. Fossils fuel (unleaded or diesel)

  4. In the US, gasoline.  There are a number of people who have adapted their hybrids to work on electricity alone for short trips, and use gasoline as a backup for longer range trips only.  They plug the car in to recharge it instead of using braking and the gas engine to recharge the batteries. The effect of the so called plug-in hybrid is to use the overwhelming majority of energy from the source from which the electric power came from.  Some people have solar panels that are capable of recharging their car, so for most of the driving they are driving a solar powered car.

  5. Gasoline, just like a regular car. It just uses less of it because it is more efficient.
