I am thinking of getting some horses (i've never had any before but am pretty experienced.) What kind of fence would be good? If you have any good websites or pictures that would be great! Thanks!

  1. We have approx 125 acres shared between horses and cows. The main property is fenced in high tencile wire. In areas where animals were smart enough to go through it we electrified it. We have one brahma cow this still did not deter so we had to also run barbed wire in between the electric strands (so-far so-good). Our paddocks and smaller pastures are field fence on wooden post with barbed wire across the top to prevent them from smashing down the field fence trying to graze or visit over it.

Fencing is a matter or personal taste, aesthetics, and budget.

I would love to have one of those vinyl fences all the way around but I want to build a house in my lifetime too.

Fencing is also going up weekly so choose quickly.

We bought 2-350' rolls of field fence two weeks ago for $119 a roll. I went back this morning for another one and (in TWO WEEKS) they have gone up to $169 for the same roll!!!! We called several other places and the prices were all the same. So keep that in mind.

  2. may i suggest electrobraid...its so strong it doesn't matter how hard a horse goes threw it it won't break and it protects from deer who use to always break my other fence wire...and its very cost efficient...

    Hope i helped..!

  3. horsewire mesh and wood posts is the safest and the best.  You can add an electirc wire at the top inside if you have horses on opposite sides that may fight.  For two horses, you won't need it.  Horsewire has openings too small for a hoof to get through it.  Mesh made for other species is not the same.

  4. NO matter what fence you put up, invest in a hot box and put hot wire around the perimeter to help protect the fence and the horse from possible injury!  It will save you money - should the horse choose to test the other fence!

  5. post and rail. or chain link fencing with hot tape .

NOT BARBED WIRE and make sure whatever you get is tightened

  6. We put up electric tape when we bought our property last year. I LOVE it.  It was easy to install, easy to figure out what we needed, cheap, safe, windproof, etc.  I sound like a commercial but I have just been SO happy with it.  I've tried lots of other fencing and this is by far the best I've found.

  7. Wooden post are the best but they are pretty expensive. We have half our paddock wooden post than the other half is electric fencing.

Electric fencing is cheap and you only need wire and stakes. Make sure the wire is tight and about 4minimum wires on the post.

I wouldn't use barb wire because it is potentially dangerous if a horse gets caught or scratches itself with it.

    Goodluck

  8. I would suggest putting up a board fence with treated posts and put an electric wire on the inside. That way, you will have more protection against them breaking out.

It really depends on what you want to spend. You could put up a woven wire fence and then you would be sure to keep your horses in. Next cheapest would be to use metal stakes and put up an electric fence. Hope this helps.

  9. Well for starters do not get barbed wire loads of horses have been injured because of that i think wooden would be the best.
