I was walking in the park yesterday and I noticed a very strange, curious gardener, I'm guessing perhaps from Turkey, that was the one who tended to this public garden/ park. As I started to become more aware of the plants, I noticed that what were normal sized in everybody else's gardens were at least 5 or 6 times the size in this park. A chill wafted across my forehead as I realized that one leaf was the size of what what usually be the entire plant. What is this gardener putting in the soil?

  1. There is nothing better for a garden than natural compost of what Nature gives us in the way of food.  The peelings of fruits and veggies, anything that is produced by a plant that we eat to nourish our bodies, nourishes plants and can be re-cycled in your garden to achieve the same results.   You can also use manure from CERTAIN types of animals, like gerbils, rabbits, and grass-fed livestock, but make sure that it is well-cured first before applying it to your soil mix.

If you are doing composting on a small scale, and don't have the set up for a large production, here's an easy method that works well for me.  I save a plastic grocery bag full of cuttings and peelings from the kitchen and store it in the fridge.  When the bag is full, I put all the peelings into a blender, add some water, and let it chop down into a mush.  Then I take that mush (which is full of nutrients and vitamins for your plants), and I mix it with some soil in a big bucket.  Then I apply it all over as a topping to plants that need a extra boost.

If you have grass clippings and or cuttings from pruning your hedges, you can add them all into the above mixture, too, and re-cycle green waste into your garden.

Another additive you can give your plants, and which almost all plants love is EPSOM SALTS, which help to balance the pH in the soil, and strengthens your  plant's roots and enables healthier growth.  You can mix it in a watering can and apply it as needed, or you can mix it in the soil and water it in good.  It works especially well with the compost method above.

Another way to re-cycle what you may have in your home is aquarium water.  When you do water changes in your fish tank, don't throw the water away.  Save the old water that you pump out into a bucket, and use it on your plants...they LOVE it, especially orchids, and other tropicals.  Fish tank water is full of vitamins and minerals that your plants need.

Good luck and hope you see some great results using the above method!

  2. Could be cow or chicken manure. Both worked into the soil early in the season prior to planting can give excellent results. Also regular watering with fish emulsion or miracle grow can help increase size and production.

  3. It may be a combination of things that make his plants so huge.  There is heat units, sunlight and energy rain fall if it is outside, (rainfall being better than watering manually)  of course manure and fertilizer plays an important part as well.  there is also pruning, and knowing when and how to do it for each type of plant.  Cultivation etc etc...keeping the parasites off, so much to tend to for the optimum effect.
