  1. A good quality (brand name) hook (not south bend) relevent to the bait you are using and the fish you intend on catching and the line you are using too.

I think I've just repeated what was said by the others too...

  2. if u r fishing with a real worm us a worm hook

  3. That's a good question because it not only depends on the species you are fishing for, but what type of bait or lure you want to use to catch that fish. Let's go with the live bait thing, the hooks used for large and smallmouth bass are typically much larger than hooks used for panfish. 1/0 - 3/0 hooks are not uncommon sizes for bass fishing while #12 - #6 hooks are for the panfish. I'm sure that someone like fish steelhead, who fishes for the larger trout and salmon species will have and use a different hook size preference for the particular species he is trying to catch. The 1/0 - 3/0 hooks are larger in size (nails) the #12 - #6 are smaller (pins). Think of it like this: the bigger the fish the bigger the hooks. One last thing, try and use circle hooks when live bait fishing. They generally hook the fish in the corner of the mouth and it's very easy to remove the hook and hopefully release the fish.

Hope this helps. Good luck and catch a bunch!

  4. Well as the Flounder has already stated, there are a bunch of different circumstances out there, such as your targeted fish and the bait that your planning on using to catch him with, so it's really a matter of getting used to your environment and what's needed in your particular situation.  Here's a good chart to use as a starting point..................
