Question:

What kind of fish should I buy?

I'm thinking of buying a fish (just one) to bring to my apartment in a few weeks. I don't want anything too expensive--college budget--and I won't be able to devote a large amount of time to one that's high maintenance. So, what sort of fish is not very expensive and won't require a great deal of attention, so I don't kill the poor bugger? =P

  1. ok so i have a pet betta and he is not much work for me i just feed him when i wake up and the same hour like 6 or 7pm for me and you only feed them when their tank when it looks dirty(does not require too much work) and all you need is a plant(probably fake) gravel, pebbles or stones/rocks water conditioner fish food (like blood worms) water and a bowl/tank (1-5 gal) no heater no filter just those things o and also a fish.hope i helped

  2. get

    a five gallon aquarium

    a small filter

    a small heater

    gravel

    live plants

    decorations

    water conditioner

    betta food

    and a betta fish

read up on cycling the aquarium and have fun

also dont listen to pet shop workers if they say they need cold water

BETTAS ARE TROPICAL AND NEED HEATERS

OMG some people have no idea what they are talking about BETTAS NEED HEATERS

they can survive for a little while in coldwater but will not live a long and happy life without one

please if you get a betta get a heater

    i cant stress that enough

  3. Like everyone else said, a Betta fish.

Or a goldfish or 2. With them it might even be easier to have 2 or 3 so they are happy together. Also they are really easy to keep alive...just feed them daily and clean there bowl every couple weeks. They don't even need a filter. Make sure you get a big enough bowl too...you can ask Petsmart, Walmart or wherever you purchase them about the size.

  4. if just one, get a beta. they do well alone. most other fish need companions.

  5. Betta fish. Males must be kept away from each other so one would work good. They are very hearty fish and are hard to kill. As long as you have a small tank with a cover (they very rarely jump) gravel, a plant, and any other optional decor he should be happy. Feed him about 3 pellets once a day and replace one third of his tanks water a day if there is no bubbler of filter and once a month if there is. That all he needs. Good luck.

And don't listen to the person a couple before me, They do NOT need heaters!

  6. If you are just getting one fish, get a betta as they remain happy even when not in a "school" of fish.

  7. definastley a betta

    they dont need any attention

    except to feed (;

  8. a betta is a good choice, plus you don't need a huge tank for a betta goog luck......

  9. guppys are really beautiful fish and theyre only like 3 dollars at petco all you need is a tank a 10 gallon with a filter and hood is 36 dollars at walmart and a heater which is $10 and i have guppies get them you wont regret it

  10. Well, looks like everyone else answered the question already.  I'd say Beta like everyone else did.  They don't require large tanks, which cuts down on cleaning, and they don't require a lot of food either.  Although, I wouldn't put other fish in with them.  Otherwise, the Beta will kill them, they are a fighting fish after all.

  11. Go with a 5 gallon aquarium starter kit that comes with a light, filter and air pump (and if your lucky may even have a heater) and buy a heater (if it doesn't come with the starter kit).

If you want only 1 fish you could put a betta in a 2.5 gallon with the heater and filter.

However with a 5 gallon you have more options I will give you some ideas below

    A. 1 Betta

         5-6 Neon (or small) tetra

    B. 2 Platties*

    C. 2 Mollies*

    D. 5-6 Danios

    E. A Dwarf Gourami

        5-6 Neon (or small) tetras

    F. An African Dwarf Frog

    G. 2-3 Guppies*

*These fish are live bearers so be sure you can s*x them or you could always end up with lots of babies

All fish are pretty low maintence in this size of a tank. You should invest in a test kit which will cost a little bit up front but will last for a while, and do weekly water changes of about 1.5 gallons.

You could get everything for easily less than $100

And after initial set up will only cost about $5 per month max to maintain (this is including the added cost on your electric bill)

  12. a betta.....

they can live in bowls and are really low maintenance. However you will have to take 15 mins. each week to clean his or her bowl....a bowl caosts about $5-10 the food is like $5 a net is about $1 and water conditioner $1 also you might want a live plant and some gravel together is like $10!
