My son is stationed up in Minot, North Dakota and I want to buy him fishing gear. I want to surprise him with it but don't know the area and don't know what to get.

  1. when you go to the fishing store ask the clerk

  2. Depends on what type of fish he likes to pursue and "how" he likes to fish for them!

Is he a fisherman? If so, he will already have certain "likes and dis-likes" about fishing outfits, lures, general equipment, Etc you've planned on surprise purchasing.

Best to get him a gift certificate to Cabelas or a local tackle store.

"Generally", a medium action spinning outfit would be a good bet, (He could fish Trout/Walleye/Bass with this outfit).

How much are you willing to spend?

    More info please.......

  3. If you're willing to spend good money for a rod and reel that will last 10+years get a shimano symetre reel that holds 10-14 lb. test and a medium berkley lightning rod. This combo has great feel and sensitivity. That will run you around $100. This is an all around great combo for anything such as walleye, bass, pike, etc.  As for tackle - walleye like live bait so you could get 1/4 oz. jigheads, bass and pike like spinnerbaits, and lipless crankbaits as well as live bait.  Cabelas has the reel on sale.

If you're looking to spend less than that, get a pre-rigged medium weight spinning rod/reel combo at any local sporting goods store.

    I hope they're biting.
