Question:

What kind of floor should I get with 4 cats?

I have 4 female cats that all live with me in my room. My room has an absolute horrible scent to it, and left my clothes smelling even more revolting. I'm not exactly sure why it's like this, or what the scent is exactly. My mother blames the carpet, which probably is the true source since I resolved a peeing/spraying? issue with the buggers quite recently. My mother tells me I would be better off getting a new floor that's linoleum that looks like wood. I'm not sure what would be best, so I'm looking for suggestions. I long for a new carpet but my mother thinks I've lost my marbles for that. If any one's been in this situation what resolved it for you? What type of floor would be best? Laminate, Linoleum, Wood, etc? (And I do not care to hear anything such as "Get rid of the cats to get rid of the cat smell," because I refuse to. Thanks)

  3. I think laminates may discolor if the cats pee on it. Same for wood. Lino is not cheap, but on the other hand you can get some very smart lino these days, not like the stuff they used to put in government offices.  If you can afford smart lino I would go for that.

  4. Wood floor definitely.  Easy to clean, won't stain, and won't soak through and absorb stench. I wouldn't get linoleum for a room other than a kitchen or bathroom.

  5. Wood floor is the easiest to clean up on. I own three cats, so I almost know how you feel. But you should definitely make sure that you have at least three litter boxes. I know it's crazy, but for four cats, it's a requirement. And my recommended brand to get rid of the odor is Febreeze, it works great for me.

  6. I know you said no tile, but tile really can work pretty well.  My bedroom is half tile, half carpet and I like it that way.  Just get several rugs that can be cleaned if anything happens again to them.

New carpet does seem risky. If they start up again and it gets back into the padding you'll be back in the same position you are now.  I don't think I would like linoleum in my bedroom, but if you'd be ok with it then that would probably be the easiest to clean. And you could always put some rugs on the linoleum.

I like hardwood, especially bamboo (cheaper and better for the environment because it grows so much faster than the trees used for regular hardwood floors).  But then I don't know about cleaning possible future cat pee/spray from it.  It will have to be sealed but I doubt that would be enough protection. That could be worth looking into if you find it appealing.

  7. Ceramic tile.  It is bleachable and easy to clean.
