We're going there for a holiday soon and I was wondering what sort of cuisine to expect and what to order in the restaurants. Maybe there's a particular dish that someone can recommend?

  1. Mmmmm, if you like your meat, then do try the Kleftico....this is usually lamb shank, cooked for several hours in a clay oven.....it just melts in your mouth...this is my absolute favourite dish here....and I'm very lucky to have a neighbour who has her own clay oven...and she cooks the best kleftico I've ever tasted!!

    There are so many dishes to try;

    Dolmades; stuffed vine leaves;

    Tsaziki; yoghurt and cucumber

    Halloumi cheese; prodused from thyme fed goats...delicious

    Keftedes; spicy meatballs

    Sheftalia; minced pork wraps...similar to sausages;

    Souvla; lamb, beef or pork..similar to a skewered  kebab,

    Tav vas; a slightly spicy beef or pork stew

    Stifado; beef cooked with tomatoes and vinegar.

    There are so many good dishes to try, its hard to pick just a few. If your brave enough, try a meze....this is little 'taster' dishes of all kinds...but be warned...there can be between 20-30 dishes served...so prepare beforehand, and don't eat too much....maybe have one of these between two or more people.

    Fresh fish is always good too. You dont say where you will be staying, but at our end of the island, I'd recommend the following;

    Protaras;

    The Olympus, Cafe Parko, Island Affair, Il Basilico

    Agia Napa;

    Tonys Taverna, The Avenue, The Limelight, Vassoss Fish Restaurant

    Vrysoulles;

    The Green Gardens, Xilinos.

    Larnaca;

    Kings, Chalmers, Cookoos Nest.

    And, here in my village, Xylofagou; The Green Door.

    Sadly, I rarely venture over to Paphos and that side of the island, so I really don't know any of the restaurants in that area....but wherever you're staying, I guarantee you wont be disappointed....the food is wonderful here!! Enjoy!!

  2. Assuming that you are going to Southern Cyprus and not supporting the illegal regime in the North of the island, you can expect a wide variety of the most delicious foods. Greek dishes such as stifado(stew), souvlaki (grilled kebab), sousoukakia (meatballs in a delicious tomato sauce) , giouvetsi (veal and pasta) and kleftiko(slow cooked lamb), plus of course fresh fish (but watch the prices!) are all readily available and are absolutely fabulous. There is of course a selection of english foods, but be brave and try what the locals eat - you'll be surprised!

  3. Delicious food!  Depends whereabouts you go but the food is obviously very influenced by Greek and Turkish cuisine.  Lots of kebabs and delicious fresh fish and rice and salads.  Proper healthy Mediterranean food.  I loved it. Enjoy!

  4. They have lots of seafood, calamari, sea bass and octopus in red wine. Meat wise they have charcoal-grilled lamb and minced meat wrapped in mesentery. Most of their meat dishes are marinated in dried coriander seeds and wine, and then dried and smoked. They use lots of cucumber and tomato. And they have a cheese which is a made out of a mixture between goat's milk and sheep's milk.

  5. You used to be able to buy a full English breakfast for a pound before the euro came in. Try the cypriot breakfast. The cypriots eat mainly Greek food, as the suthern part is Grreek and the northern part it turkish.
