I am going on a 3.5 day trip to Atlanta, GA for what I like to refer to as "Nerdfest", bka DragonCon. The hotel where we will be staying is adjacent to a food court but I get really tired of fast food really quick. Also, I do not want to spend a ton of money at "sit-down-restaurants", so I was wondering what I can pack with me that I can keep fresh in a cooler, and does not have to me microwaved....(no microwave in the hotel...all I have is hot water). The only thing I can think of is Ramen for some reason, so please give me some suggestions...

THANKS! ~A Nerd~

  1. Deli foods such as: ham, turkey(you are what you eat), bologne(your full of it), pastrami, cheese(for ur cheesy head), bread and the trimmings. BY THE WAY>>>>>.WHAT KIND OF SLEAZY MOTEL IS IT TO NOT HAVE A MICRO?

  2. peanut butter.

    trail mix

    dehydrated soups

    apples, citrus fruits

    cheese

.....you can ask hotel to allow you use of micro-wave.

In the morning, enjoy their complimentary breakfast.  Bag up as much food as you can carry.  If you are a true nerd, you won't be self conscious. Bag food in the provided plastic bag for dirty laundry, turn on steam iron and tv, watch the news while shooting steam into bag.

Or, before you leave for the day, heavily salt raw meat, wrap tightly in shower cap.  Turn room temp to hot.  Hang one drawer from ceiling over heater, place shower cap in drawer, put another on top of first drawer...and voila!:  Your very own convection oven!

  3. i have no idea but i love to eat chiken and curry! LOL

  4. Cheese and crackers

Certainly you could take some bread and PB&J

    Nuts

Fruit--just keep it in a container so it doesn't actually touch the ice

    Pudding snack packs

    Jello snack packs

  5. Dragon Con ur soooooo lucky Iwish I could go :) sorry I digress

Marriott not exactly know to be smart in culinary area of food for guests...no microwave....pfft

Cooler with lots of ice paks.... to keep cold items very cold....

those variety pack cereals with small sizes of milk; small chopped veggies and fruits in ziploc baggies; different varieties of juices; deli type foods that taste great at room temp; pita bread, nutella, peanut butter etc....

Pretzels, popcorn, dark chocolate (sorry that's me thinking out loud)

Good luck & have fun I heard James Marsters from BTVS might be there.... :)

  6. Peanut butter-based meals might be a good start, at least for b'fast and lunch.  For breakfast, a peanut-butter & banana sandwich on whole wheat bread. Same for lunch.  As a snack, PB on saltines.

Also, fresh fruit.  You will be in GA, so maybe you can find some peaches.

    Yoghurt, nuts (almonds,pistachioss) for snacks.

Since you are on what sounds like a mini-vacation, I suggest you go out for at least one meal a day.  Travel a little outside your normal range of comfort & eating habits - treat yourself to something special!

I hope you have a wonderful time.

  7. I live south of Atlanta, and I recommend you get away from the food courts, take a little time to get away from the "busy" sit-down places, and explore the MANY inexpensive mom and pop restaurants Atlanta has to offer...very inexpensive, and REALLY good food. That's unless you want to eat noodles, vienna sausage and beanie-weenies 3.5 days!

    Hope you enjoy Hotlanta!:)

  8. Cereal/granola for brkfst. nuts & dried fruits for snacks.Buy a loaf of bread or pita, mustard,an onion then some turkey or other lunch meat and keep it in the cooler. You can keep mayo in the cooler. Make a big batch of rice ahead of time and keep in cooler. Get a roasted whole chicken @ the store and cut it up into the rice with some soy sauce & onion and sliced carrots for dinner. Use the chicken as your lunch meat too. Sliced tomatoes for side dish and on sandwiches.

  9. Curd Rice is truly comfort food! Of South Indian origin, it tastes great with just a pickle or chutney . just mix curd and rice. season it with mustard seeds and little pieces of green chillies. you can also add small pieces of ginger and cucumber to the rice if you want. it tasted divine cold and will keep for 3 days. it is just yum!

  10. Lunchmeat will stay fresh in a cooler, Ramen would not ba a great idea if you cannot boil your water.. Keep a little jug of milk for cereal..

  11. sandwiches, some ppl like cold pizza/hotdogs, nachos! w/cheese and salsa(yummyyy), tacos, salad, that soup thats supposed to be cold, mac and cheese, the list goes on. i love ramen btw.

  12. My husband goes to conventions all the time and packs food because he also gets tired of the convention fare. His go-to items include a loaf of whole-grain bread, peanut butter, jelly, whole-grain crackers, apples (do not need to be refrigerated and don't bruise as easily as some other fruit), a few small containers of pre-cooked bulgur, couscous, brown rice, or whole wheat pasta, and those vacuum-sealed bags of tuna. The only thing on the list that really even needs to be refrigerated would be the Tupperware containers of pre-cooked grains/rice/pasta--he usually mixes these with the bagged tuna and says it keeps him full for hours.

    Have fun!
