  2. Spain has a total different style of foods from the foods that are cooked in Mexico.

There is Tapas, Paella, Paprikas.   and so much more to eat in European style.

  3. Not at ALL like Mexican!!!!  It´s a common misconception among Americans.

In Spain, for instance, a tortilla is a fat omelette, not a flat sort of bread.

They eat a lot of rice dishes, like paella.  Pasta is fairly popular, and often potatoes come as a side dish.  In the center of the country, hunting meats are very popular, and on the coasts, LOTS of seafood, but as the country isn´t very large, excellent seafood is available pretty much anywhere.

Foods are usually very tasty, with rich sauces, though there aren´t a lot of herbs or spices used in traditional dishes, mostly foods are flavored with onion, garlic, and salt.  Much is fried or sautéed, often with olive oil, and a little dish of olives is a common accompaniment with lunch or dinner at restaurants.  Paella, a rice stew of mixed vegetables and meats, often made with seafood, and always yellowed with saffron, is the national dish, and can be bought almost anywhere, although on my last trip, I noticed that a lot of places are selling it from a box, all they do is add water and heat.

Beans are included in a LOT of dishes, but they are very different from the ones found in Mexico, and they are prepared differently.  Typical beans found in Spain are lentils, garbanzos, and habas (Fava beans), and white beans.  Few pintos or black beans.  And the typical hot, spicy, picante that you´re used to in Mexico...absolutely NOT Spanish.

It is important to note that I am giving you typical or traditional rules.  There are plenty of places now, since Spain has been opened up to more exchange of ideas with other countries, that serve very avante-garde foods, lots of fusion-type restaurants, and newer ideas coming into the country, and if you want to check out anything really modern in Spain, the place to look is Cataluña.  Everything at the forefront of modern seems to enter the country through that region.

I love Spain, and the food, there.  Lots to check out...you should go, just to taste EVERYTHING

  4. Mexico's food is pretty different--in Spain, they really don't have spicy food and what they call a tortilla is an omelette.  On the coasts of Spain they eat a lot of seafood--paella is a traditional dish (rice & seafood), tortilla espanola is a potato & onion omelette & they do a lot of tapa hopping (trying tiny appetizer plates at different bars.)  Beans are eaten a lot, but not like Mexican beans--chickpeas fried in olive oil & garlic, lentils, etc.  They cook a lot with olive oil, eat lots of fruits like oranges in the south and pears, strawberries in the north.  Each region has dishes that they are known for: stew in Madrid, octopus in Galicia, etc.

  5. Some foods in Mexico have their origins from Spain but not all.   The names are different...   The foods in Spain and Mexico are definitely different.

  6. No, there is more of a Mediterranean flair to Spanish food. Tapas include ingredients like fish native to the Amalfi Coast, meat and cheese plates (manchego cheese - yum!), and paella.
