Question:

What kind of formula to try?

my son is going to be 3 months on sept 8th. 2 weeks ago he stopped breast feeding (his choice!) and i'm still trying to find the right formula for him. we started off with nestle Good Start Iron Fortified (purple lable) but his p**p went really dark. I googled it and dark poops mean either too much iron or a tear in the intestines. So I went to walmart and the one with the lowest amount of iron was Parent's Choice - which is almost the same as the Good Start but the good start had 1.2mg of iron where the Parents choice only had 0.47. The Parent's Choice got his poops back to a healthy colour but now he seems constipated. He has had VERY tiny bowel movements and they all have are thicker then peanut butter (which i've read is bad). All the formulas that we have looked at have 1 - 1.22mg of iron and i think that might be too much.

We are seeing the doctor on Tuesday and will be discussing it then, but i just want to know what kind of formula you think we should try.

  1. I think you should try Nutramigen.

  2. Try just using Nestle Good Start, the plain stuff.

  3. My daughter had the same problems...Aptimil Easy Digest is a great baby formula for the bowel reasons and i noticed a change very quickly in how easy she found it to p**p...The Easy digest encourages bowel movement and breaks down stools in softer p**p...

You can get Aptimil easy digest from Sainsbury's (That's the only place i have ever seen it oh and Asda)...Aptimil Easy Digest is from birth onwards...

  4. Well, I used Enfamil Lipil with iron for both of my daughters.  Maybe he just hadn't gotten used to formula yet and that's why his bowel movements looked that way.  Just ask your doctor his/her advice.  They know your baby and could help you find the right formula for him.  Good luck!

  5. I was just at the Dr on wednesday for a similar reason. he was going to give my 4.5 month old  laxitive but he could not find any that were safe for babies. he told me to add a teaspoon of Karo Syrup to her bottle up to 3 times a day to make her p**p.

  6. I use Enfamil Lipil and it works for us. I would stick with whatever your baby is happy with.  Lots of people end up jumping from one formula brand to another, which can be bothersome to a baby's system. Don't worry about the iron content. Any of the formula's on the market will give your baby adequate iron. If your baby isn't fussy on a formula then i would stay with it. the poops will become regulated and normal.
