There are different species of pigeons, and they don't all eat fruit.  In fact, there are roughly 300 species of pigeons (or doves).  Pink-necked Green Pigeons are one species that eat mainly fruits.  The frugivorous species eat fruit.  Here's a frugivorous pigeon:

Different species would prefer different fruits.  I'd try feeding your pigeon different types of berries.

generally speaking pigeons don't eat fruit

They are seed eaters so their diet is composed of mainly seeds and nuts, and the occasional berry =)
