8rt(x) is it:

power function

root function

polynomial function

rational function

algebraic function

trigonometric function

exponential function

logarithmic function.

I know that it is not a/an trigonometric function, exponential function, logarithmic function or power function. I am fairly certain it is not a rational function or polynomial function which only leaves. root (which I'm sure it is) and algebraic but when I selected just root and then both root and algebraic it was wrong...which one(s) is it?

  1. It's a power function: y = x^ (1/8).

It's also a root function and an algebraic function.

It's algebraic because x satisfies the equation

    x = y^ 8, which is a polynomial in y.

  2. I can confirm it is not a polnomial or rational function as you thought as well as the others you ruled out. Except I would sugguest it would be a power function (although I don't know the exact definition) this function can be wirtten in the form x^1/8 with 1/8 as the power. It is definately a root function also

  3. It would be considered a Transcendental function

  4. y = x^(1/8) is an exponential function.

  5. Power function

    Root function (most specifically)

    Algebraic function (most generally)

Allen and Tim are wrong. It's absolutely not a transcendental function (that's the opposite of an algebraic function). It is also not an exponential function because that would require the variable to be an exponent, like 3^x. He mixed it up with a power function which is like x^3 or x^.125.
