  1. if your just starting chin height is fine. if ur planing on doing somethings more than others you may want to change it up a bit. freestyle boards are shorter so they can be moved around easier fro tricks. if you live near some big mountains you want a longer board for riding in the powder.

as far as width it depends on 1: boot size, if you've got big feet and a skinny board your gonna have problems. 2: handling thinner boards tend to be a Little quicker to respond on hard snow. and 3: if you are gonna ride in alot of powder wider boards move alot better.

you will also need boots. the only variations in a good pair of boots is stiffness. stiffer boots respond faster as far as handling but softer boot are gonna give you help if you dont have the best balance. personally i like soft boots, but you gotta find what you like

  2. When it comes to board length, there is no set "length-to-height" standard. It's all up to what you want, and how it feels.

The longer the board the quicker you can stop and the stronger it usually is. You will feel more "secure and in control" with the bigger  board.

The smaller your board the more maneuverable it is, and easy to handle. It will turn sharper, and will be lighter, but may feel more weak and flimsy under your feet. Freestyle snowboarder usually favor a shorter board for tricks, since it is more easily maneuverable.

As for brand. Unless you're got a huge chuck of cash, and are serious about snowboard I wouldn't venture into a Burton snowboard (The most recognized brand). Because of the hype over their brandname, their board are way over priced and don't deliver any more features than board half their price in other brands (UNLESS you spend $400 on the board alone).

I'd suggest getting a Lamar board. They have a lot of "flex" to them (Meaning they will be a lot and not be stiff), even more so than burton boards. They are a well recognized name, and you can get a good one for under $200 (Try a Lamar Mission, or Lamar Ultra).

As for bindings I WOULD get Burton. They have the best bindings and they aren't too expensive (Try Burton Customs (08), or Burton Missions (08)). They'll run around $140+

For boots, just get whatever it comfortable. Any brand will do as long as you feel good in it.

    Good luck!
