What kind of gift should I get for an "adoption celebration" party?

My cousin and his wife are adopting a little boy (he's been living with them as a foster child for a while, but now the adoption is official.) Their new son is about 4 1/2 years old. Should I get something for the boy, or the parents, or what? I've never bought anything for an adoption party before--ideas, please!

  1. I've never heard of an adoption celebration party.  Maybe they are not fishing for gifts, maybe they are just happy and want to share their happiness.

You are not compelled to bring any gift.  If you insist, some ideas could include a U.S. Savings Bond in the boys' name, or better, a gift certificate for a family photo at a studio.

  2. I would just send a toy for the son.  In this case, it's not really a shower to get the parents ready to care for the child.  It's a celebration of an important event.

  3. Hmmm...I've never bought anything for this type of occasion either, but I would suggest:

***A nice picture frame or photo album with a family theme. If you have pictures of them, include these in the frame/album.

***Something for the boy that shows him that he is a treasured/beloved part of the family. Maybe something personalized that has his first name with his new last name. This personalized item could be something cute that he can use.

***A nice frame with an inspirational message regarding family.

  4. get the kid a little toy or something and the parents something for the house or whatever.
