I spent $1,800.00 my first year for items for my special education classroom.  I would have appreciated a gift certificate to an educational store in my town or a bookstore.  Teachers appreciate any gift from their students, but there are only so many mugs they can use!

And of course you must add a heart felt, hand written letter saying thank you for all the hard work she did and who much you appreciate her, etc!

A new teacher spends a fortune on things for her classroom.  You could give her a gift certificate to a local educational store or a catalog such as "Great Stuff".  She can get decorations for her room, supplies, toys for her treasure chest, ect. ect.

a new teacher is also a poor teacher (lots of student loans to pay back, and lowest on the salary scale).  I say a gift card to Target, restaurants, or especially a teacher/educator store would be very nice.  Office stores like Staples and Office Depot would also be nice.  It's expensive to be a teacher and build your classroom materials.
