My brother is going to the 11th grade and he wants to go to duke and become a doctor. his grades arent all that good though. In 9th grade he made like b's and c's and like a couple a's. In tenth grade he made like a few b's and a c and a couple a's. He does rotc and just started cross country this year but that is all that he does at school. I hate to hurt his hopes but I dont know if that will be good enough?

any thoughts???

  1. try contacting a student who goes to duke by seeing if they have a rep coming to ur bro's school; he/she should have a good idea. but other than that, it really depends. i dont know WHAT colleges look at; i think they look at the big picture but its hard to say what the real deciding factors are.

    good luck

  2. If your brother wants to get into a pre-med program he will really need to knuckle down in his 11th and 12th grade.  He will have to try for all a's.  He will have to take biology, chemistry, advance biology, and advanced math, too.  There is a chance he go to college on an ROTC scholarship... yes, those are really great, since they pay for your college... and if they know he wants to go into medicine, they will be even more interested... He will have to commit to 6 years + in the military.

  3. Not even close to the grades needed for Duke unless he has a 2200 SAT and is a 7'2 baskbetball star.

  4. Duke is one of the best colleges in the country and therefore one of the most competitive.  Unless your brother is offered an athletic scholarship because he excels in some sport, Duke won't even look at students who don't make straight As or very close to it.  They don't need to - they have more 4.0 students applying than they have seats in their freshman class.

Now, that doesn't mean he can't get his degree somewhere else and come down here to go to medical school at Duke.  Again, he's going to have to have a phenomenal GPA in college - like, no lower than 3.70 and preferably no lower than 3.8.

Duke is incredibly expensive.  Four years for undergrad at Duke is going to cost him well over $150,000.  That's a lot of financial burden to take on, especially with 4 years of medical school ahead.

Bottom line?  The top schools take the best of the best students.  Occasionally they dip into the "lower class" and admit someone with a lower GPA who has something unusual or different to offer the school.  If your brother has been a fair-to-middlin student all through high school and hasn't been motivated enough to get the grades for a top-notch school, then he needs to set his sights lower.  And he needs to learn about work ethic before he goes to college, because the kids who party for 4 years and make Bs and Cs don't get into medical school.

  5. More than likely, he will be denied immediately.  Most Duke students have weighted GPA of 4.2 or more and a very high SAT score on top of it.  Have him choose another school as a back-up choice.  Two or three would probably be good with grades like that, especially if he doesn't do well on the SATs.  Have him to take the SATs immediately so he can get a grip on reality.
