Question:

What kind of grains can a raw vegan eat?

Don't uncooked oats hurt your tummy? I tried the wrong oats (non "quick" oats) in those super yummy chocolate (with peanut butter , but you can't taste it) vegan refridgerator cookies, and... oh. it kind of aches. Do you just live with that feeling? or do you have a stomach of steel now?

Or, are raw vegans not allowed to eat even steel cut oats because it has some minimal processing? oh, that's a silly question, right? raw vegans can eat oats, as long as they are not COOKED oats, yes?

Do raw vegans eat cereal for breakfast? (besides raw food energy bars, I mean) like corn flakes? or something? puffed wheat is out, then? is shredded wheat heated in the process? so,

can you have Triscuts crackers? or shredded wheat cereal?

I'm just curious! Thank you!

Yes, I suppose I should just find a raw vegan MB, forum or chat room type thingie. Maybe I will do that. Thanks to the poster who suggested that!

  1. You are not likely to be able to eat any cereal or cracker products because the food is cooked at some stage. Raw oats are fine for you to eat. Steal cut or rolled oats are both an uncooked product. Even quick cook oats are uncooked but cut to a very small size. Your tummy might hurt because digesting raw foods, especially uncooked grains are hard on the digestive system, There is no heat to help start breaking the food down as with cooked foods.  Particularly if this is a new diet. Give your body time to adjust and remember to drink lots of water with all this uncooked high fiber food you are eating.

Other raw grain options would be sprouted whole grains such as wheat berries or rye berries. You need to sprout them to make them soft enough to eat. Sprouting also increases their nutritional value. Sprouting dry whole grains requires soaking them for a day or so and then keeping them in a damp, dark container with a mesh top for air circulation. It is not unsimilar to the way you grow alfalfa sprouts. Look for any recipe for sprouted wheat berry bread and you should find directions on how to sprout the wheat berries. Sprouting is not cooking and requires no heating.  You can find recipes for wheat berry salads. Most of these recipes are for cooked wheat berries but you could adapt them to using sprouted wheat berries instead of cooked wheat berries. Remember that if you really want to be a raw foods vegan, you are going to have to go to a lot of effort to make your diet interesting. Try experimenting with dry grains by soaking them to soften them. I know you can use soaking to soften dried garbanzo beans enough to grind them into a paste for hummus. You might have some luck with just soaking grains to make them soft enough to eat in salads.

  2. Have some cooked chicken. Chickens eat grains so it's ok.
