What kind of grass is best for backyards?

I need your help on what kind of grass I need to put in my backyard. No synthetic grass. The foot traffic would be about medium (3 kids playing) and I live in sunny Riverside, CA.

I would try a Zoysia for your lawn, due to the kids.

I live in SE Arizona and have Bermuda grass growing in my back yard.  It is VERY drought tolerant but it's not as strong as Zoysia (due to the fine blades) and the dogs have run a dirt path around our perimeter.

But...I always recommend people contact their regional extension office and talk to a Master Gardener.  They would give you even better ideas, I'm sure.  The link is the third one down.
