What kind of grass is best?

I live In Southern California and I'm about to tear out my old lawn to put in a new lawn but I'm not sure what type of grass is best. I need a grass that you can lie on and won't hurt/prickle you. It also needs to be comfortable to walk around bare footed. I don't mind the ones that require high maintenance. I also have one tree on the lawn but it doesn't shade the whole lawn, just a patch of it and it doesn't always shade the lawn because of sun up and down. So far, I'm looking at Zoysia, Tall Fescue, Bermuda, St. Augustine, and KY Bluegrass. Any suggestions???

Also with that, any suggestions of what tools to use to tear out an old lawn?

  1. I say stick with marathon 2 or 3 it has a nice blend of the different grasses. making a nice lawn that won't hurt and won't have too much problems. a lot of times if you go with one type of grass it will have some sort of problem. st augustine.. it hurts, zoysia.. look good only certain times of the year and so on so on. oh but one suggestion that i will make would be red fescue. it has this wavey kool kind of flow. if you been to magic mountain in so cal its grown all over there on the hill side. I know the guy who planed the design for the whole place and he likes it.. Ive seen it as lawn and it gives a unique nice texture.

  4. the best grass is the kind you can smoke...

  5. for shade- bermuda

    for something tough- san agustin

  6. KY Bluegrass is likely the hardiest. I'm not in SoCal, so I can't give the best advice, but I'm sure any local nursery can assist.

Also, if you're talking about "grass" be sure to plant it in the backyard.

  7. Zoysia, I have Zoysia, Bermuda and St. Augustine in my lawn.

I am trying to figure out what I want after I install my sprinkler system.

I do sprinkler installs but mostly maintenance and repairs and the Zoysia seems to best in all conditions and is really nice to the feet and hands when having to work in it.

  8. Wow!  I remember doing a paper on that topic years ago and was blown away by all the growing regions in Southern California!  From coastal to desert, various soils, etc......no easy answer.

Here's a web site with a few words on each type you are looking at.  You'll have to decide.....but consult experts.....Cooperative Extension Service.....and watch lawns in your area.  Do you want green all year?
