  2. The cattle gun is a handheld device connected to an air compressor.  

    The gun that you're referring to is just a 12 guage shotgun with a silencer attached.  It looks like a Remington 11-87, but it could be any of a number of standard hunting models.

    EDIT:

    From what I can gather, it's not a real gun.  In the DVD commentary, the Coens said that the gun was custom-built by the prop department.
