What kind of gun do pilots use during flight?

The most recent case of someone being endangered apparently occurred on the flight deck of a US Airways flight on approach into Charlotte. Whoops!

Don't get me wrong; I'm all in favor of arming pilots but I'd sure like to know what happened here. All parties concerned are withholding any further info.

Pilots are allowed to carry a pistol, if they have an apropriate licence. Aside from that, it would be their choice. To speculate, it would likely be something average to small size and concealable. The smaller end of the spectrum would be something like a .380 ACP.  The Walther PPK is my favorite in this category. It's light, and reliable, but still accurate for its size. The next step up would be something like a Glock-26. This is a super compact 9mm, which allows a bit more power than a .380, but isn't impractically large. It would still require a belt or shoulder holster. These are just a couple of exellent pistols for such a job, but you're likely to find a large variety if you polled pilots who carry.

I don't think they carry weapons it would just be even more unsafe.. imagine a terrorist got onto a plane unarmed and he gets in to a flight deck..

I'm not sure what news you've been reading.  There hasn't been a hijacking in 7 years.  Pilots aren't exactly getting hurt by terrorists or psychos on a daily basis.

Pilots *can* get certificated as Federally Deputized officers and carry duty weapons, however to date most have not done so.  A significant number have, but the majority have not.
