  1. One that fits your hand well, that you're confident with ( LOVE my Glock 40), and one that fits in your locked safe!!!!!

Get training or better yet, don't get a gun at all.

  2. you should find a local gun store that has a range - they're all over the place. Ask the gun dealer what he/she recommends and sometimes they will let you shoot it there. Once you make up you mind - take an in-depth training class - not just the cheesy one that most states make you take prior to buying a handgun - take a good class.

Then you need to think about where you are going to keep the gun and how to keep it away from your child - many states have trigger lock laws.

If you know someone who is a gun enthusiast then you should ask him/her where you should take the class - take the class and practice shooting before you even think about keeping a loaded gun at home.

We've always kept the clip out of a weapon when it's in the house - along with an empty chamber - it takes no time to chamber a round.

  3. a plastic one

  4. My advice would be to go to a range that rents different guns, and try out a few, and get the one you feel most confident in. Revolvers are a great choice, I have NEVER heard of a revolver jamming when you need it most, but most newer semi autos are reliable guns, but usually require more work to operate i.e. safety.  With a revolver you simply pull the trigger to fire.  I would suggest a 3-4 inch .38 special, effective manstopper and minimal recoil.  Although Glock pistols are my favorite as far as a defensive pistol.
