Question:

What kind of hook ups do jbl L890s have?

I've got a 500W stereo system with some pretty good speakers, but i'm looking to upgrade to better speakers.

My only concern is the way the L890s hook up to the stereo. The stereo has a hook up for the main speakers (4-8ohm) and a hook up for the subwoofer (6-16ohm). Each has 4 wires that hook up under the headings (main speakers, subwoofer).

Should I buy these speakers without buying a new stereo? Will these speakers hook up to my stereo and be ok?

  1. Speakers need careful system matching to get the best sound from them. The JBL's you refer to are very fussy with partening equipment. I doubt the system you were planing on using will be good enough to get the best out of the speakers, which will result in money wasted.

They are likely to sound very harsh and will fatigue any listening pleasure after a short time.

There are many good quality AV amps & stereo amps at reasonable prices.

Look for some other amplification. Sony do some excellent 'AV amps' at a reasonable price. The newly released Sony STR-DG820 is getting raving reviews, its the best AV amp about for the price range.

I like the sound of marantz 'stereo amps.' Very solid controlled sound. The Marantz PM6002 is a fantastic sounding amplifier for the money.

Oh, as for the four connectors you refer to on the speakers, that is for wiring.  Heres a link to see exactly what that means. http://www.brilliancehifi.co.uk/how-to-b...

Good luck on whatever you choose

  2. Hmm, I'm not sure I understood you correctly: Are you saying, that your stereo amp uses four wires to connect each of the two stere speakers? (There is such a scenario ... some speakers as those jbl ones and some amps support it ... it's called bi-wiring .... and doesn't give you any all too significant advantage, but may be used if you are a perfectionist. ;) )

If that's not the case and you meant two wires for each of the stereo speakers and four for the subwoofer: That would be a normal scenarion and as the JBL speakers have an impedance of 8 Ohm it would work for you .... well: If your amp supports bi-wiring, it would work, too. So in any case: Yes, you can use the speakers. You should however be aware that the L890 only take 125W continiously. You shouldn't turn your reciever all the way up ... actually far from max. ;) No worries though: 2x125W still is plenty of power for all normal rooms .... all the more with a decent sub.
