here's a quick 411.

I bought this horse for $225. She is 17 h tall and has been extremely abused and neglected. I have no idea what kind of horse she is. Her hooves are black and very small (and when I say small, I mean compared to my 1200 lb Appaloosa's feet), but based on my experience with Arabs, they look normal for Arab feet. She does have an Arab looking head, and I know that the flea-bitten gray is very common in Arabs, HOWEVER, i do know that Arabs very rarely if ever, reach 17 H. Now I have seen 16.2 H Arabs, so it's not completely impossible. Also she has a very long back, as most Arabs are short backed. Any ideas?

Here's her pics

  1. I see absolutely no arab in that horse...

Best guess, Thoroughbred or even Running Quarter.

  2. Anglo- arabian... She has a tattoo on her lip she was a racer,... and she may not have a dish in her nose like an arab but anglo- arab is Thoroughbred and Arabian. Keep that in mind! godbless

  3. i would guess shes a TB, have you checked her upper lip? if theres a tattoo that would narrow it down to QH or TB, pretty much.

but anyways, she looks very much like the "new type" TB, with small feet, long back, plain head (but still cute in her case!) black feet, and it easily explains the height and color.

look at this OTTB, looks just like her!

http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/imag... (this horse is also 17 hands..)

goood job for picking her up!, shes skinny now but i think with some fat and muscle you've got a pretty fancy horse!

EDIT: !!!!! yay!  with the weird marks on her legs, id assume shes pin fired-making her a TB for sure! wooo! (I'm excited for you!)

now, you CAN contact the JC and pay $35 to find out her race name, parents, the farm where she was born, and how many times she raced/how much she won. (but they wont tell you anything from AFTER the track..)

if you don't want to do that get the letter from her tattoo (its the first digit)  this will tell you her age at the very least.  My horse has an S and he turned 19 this year, so a T would mean she turned 18 and so on.

-if you want to pay to look her up, respond back and I'll help you out [= (or with anything else TB, I'm a bit obsessed [=)

EDIT (2): i lied! its 6 total, a letter and 5 numbers (read my horses wrong, sorry!)   if she was 12 then it should be a Z

    this is helpful-http://www.netposse.com/prevrec/tattoo_e...

    but...

    G would make her 5,

    Q would make her 21

    C would maker her 9

    U would make her 17

...i just picked out the ones that seemed similar, but an L would maker her less then one (or not born) or 26, hahah.

  4. Most definitely a TB.  Great buy!

The waffle looking scars on her legs is from pin-firing, a treatment done to racehorses, usually at 2.  The tattoo, I'd say, confirms that she's a TB, as they are tattooed when they race.  Contact the Jockey Club.  They should be able to give you her info from the tattoo, such as her bloodlines, where and who bred her, when she raced, her race record and her age.

Her face looks remarkably like my TB gelding's.  She's got a great kind eye, though she looks worried, probably from being abused.

Helen of Troy is the woman a previous answerer was thinking of, not Joan of Arc.  How about Callista for a name?  It's from Greek and means 'most beautiful'.

Good luck with her.  I'm glad she found a good home.

  5. She has some Quarter horse features about her.  A lot of the older halter type QH have such small legs and hooves compared to their bodies which caused them to break down at a younger age.

She is probably crossed  with something.  Could have TB in her.  Unfortunately she is the only one that knows.

She does have a very cute head though.

  6. My guess is a Lipizzaner cross, probably with TB.

I do not see any Arab traits in that horse.

Just mho and some personal experience with Lips.

  7. I also agree that she looks to be a Arab cross. I had a 4 y/o 1/2 Arabian, 1/4 Thoroughbred, 1/4 Belgium that stands at 16 1 and is still growing. She seems to favor the Arab head with the thoroughbred body. She is very cute. She should fill out nice. Good luck with her.

  8. I would wait till you fatten her up and then find out she is all bones her color remindes me of a gray horse that is coloring they call in quarter horses they get grayer as they get older

  9. To me she looks like a thoroughbred, or maybe an anglo-arabian.  Being a thoroughbred would explain her height, hooves, and long back.

  10. Looks part Lippizan, part Quarter Horse.

    Meh

  11. She kinda looks part Thoroughbred...

    Maybe Arab/Thoroughbred?

    http://www.cccorrals.com/images/thorough...

  12. She definatly looks like she has some Arab in her. She's probably a grade horse with some Arab blood. She's very thin from neglect and that could be why her back looks so long, or she could just have poor confirmation.

I'm glad you bought her. She needs love!

With some TLC she will be beautiful and good luck with your new horse!

  13. Hi again...

For a name, I just thought of Joan of Arc...didn't she travel in the Trojan horse?

She really doesn't look "that" bad..I have seen so much worse...although all her scars tell a different story.  When you say waffle design..I remember when they use to pin fire but that was up and down the whole cannon bone area (and was done to tighten the tendons..usually when bowed so they could be ridden after being broke down) unless they do specific areas..but that is old fashioned (I think) I saw it more back in the "old fashioned" days when I was riding hunt seat and TB's. Hers is around the fetlock area or up the back from the fetlock?

Also, as far as the feet, arabs have more of a wide hoof..to paddle across the desert sands!!  As far as breed..I really think Thoroughbred or Standardbred...the tattoo (inside the upper lip?) is a definite indication of being registered and probably one of the two breeds I mentioned.  Although I just took another peek and maybe QH???

She just neds some TLC and groceries..well moved out of her belly and redirected to rump and back!!  She is very nice looking...gray is my favorite color....actually she reminds me of my first ride...Joker!!

Check with the breed registry...I may have access to the Standardbreds through someone that is on another forum..if you need some assistance.

Pull her mane!!  Her haircut does nothing for her neck..he he

    Enjoy her...

    **********EDIT*****

Thank you Christina..you have now proved that I am no better now with history than when I was in school...at least I remembered someone rode in that steel horse....(just kiddin' I know it was wooden)  Joan, Helen, Arc,Troy...at least you knew who I meant!! Tee Hee

  14. I think she looks like a TB. I don't see any Arabian in that horse AT ALL.

  15. I'm going to say TB/Arab Cross.

She's got the high and long back of a TB, but obvious face of an Arab.

  16. Looks like the one that the  3 STOOGES used to ride

  17. Name her Phoenix - like "rising from the ashes"...

    I think it'd be a cute name.

Also, I just want to say thank you for helping to save one more horse that probably would have just been written off as unusable. I would bet that she will become WAY more valuable to you than any expensive, well bred, well cared for horse may have been. Great job!  I hope everything goes great for you and her!

  18. i think shes a cross arab..

shes real pretty and she'll look even better when she fills out her figure!

  19. i think she is thoroughbred and arab cross. Name her pearl or celica.

  20. she's full TB as far as i can tell

  21. id say shes a tb cross

i like the name snowflake for her

  22. I see a warmblood TB cross, or even just TB.  I'm not seeing Arab unless it's a grandparent.

  23. I would bet my life that shes all thoroughbred. How old is she? I couldn't quite tell about her legs, but I think she has rather nice conformation, she should be quite lovely when shes fattened up.

I don't see any arab  in her at all.

  24. The tasty kind. :D

But seriously she looks part quarter hors to me.

  25. I'd say she looks like a TB.

Remember to post new pictures when she's feeling better.

Kudos to you for buying/rescuing  her.

  26. The ears are arabian the feet are quater horse and the long back could be a thourough bred or a standerd bred.

  27. She looks like a thoroughbred to me, since she has long legs, face and back, but she could also be a mix

have you checked under her lip to see if she has any race numbers or checked her legs for tiny burn marks indicating a possible injury on the track?

she's a nice looking mare despite her weight

    i love grey's

esp. my flea bitten quarter horse Axel

  28. I think maybe Arabian Standardbred cross.

  29. she could ba an Arab Cross/.'

    or maybe a Devon Arab
