I don't have the fancy lighting or set-up, but would love to add some color around the house. Are there house plants that grow in regular light, and are easy to take care of? I also have a cat, so it can't be anything poisonous, obviously.

  1. Do you want to put the plants inside the house?  If you do, then here are some choices:

    - Phyllodendron

    - Scindapsus

    - Spatiphyllum

    - Dieffenbachia

    - Sansiviera

    - Aglaonema

All of them are leafy ornamental plants that are very easy to take care and can be put indoor.  You can type the name on browse the figure. Note for Dieffenbachia, your cat will not attack it but please notice that it produce oxalic acid that can be irritation.

  3. Hello Matthew. Most house plants are poisonous. But the easiest to look after are a Rubber Tree, and a Spathyphyllum(peace Lily). You could also try a Bonsai.I doubt your cat would enjoy the taste anyway.Check with your local garden center, they will advise you.

  4. Pothos is a very easy plant.  It is ivy-like and does well in low light (but it also likes light).  Snake plants are wonderful.  They look great and can really take a lot of abuse.  Any type of cactus is fairly easy to care for, but they do like some sunshine.  There is a plant called Wandering Jew which is also easy and has lovely green and purplish leaves.

  5. The zz plant is a good one easy to take care of and not toxic to cats. I'm very careful because my cat will chew on my plants.

To start with, you can assume anything with square stems (in cross-section) and opposite leaves is OK. That's the hallmark of the mint family, which includes catnip, _Nepeta_ and _Coleus_. Catnip can be grown in a bright window in the winter, but the cats may knock it off the sill. Coleus is easy, and kind of bright and cheerful with its colored leaves. Swedish Ivy, _Plectranthus_, is also in this family and incredibly easy to grow. Good hanging basket plant. Tolerates kitty-nibbles well.

If you have a bright window these plants are safe for cats.
