  1. Despite previous answers Australia had distinctive architectual phases by this time due to the differences in climate creating different needs from those in colder countries.

Around the turn of the century, the "Federation style" house was dominant amongst more well-to-do families.

In the 1920s a style of house called "California Bungalow" became popular in more leafy suburbs (such as Eastwood, in Sydney). Shaped like the American houses of the same style, only using brick more than wood.

However the poorer areas (such as Paddington) had 'terrace houses' which appear more like those in Britain. There were no inside toilets and the outhouses (called a dunny http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outhouse#Du... were not connected to mains sewers but were instead serviced by the "Dunny Man"

Outer suburbs had fibro houses. These were built with a wooden frame supporting fibro-cement walls.

Houses in Queenland were built on tall pylons to allow for air to circulate underneath the houses. These are called "Queenslanders" and existed also in Darwin (they would lose favour when people would decades later use air-conditioning)
