What kind of humidifier should i get? or do i even need one?

I just moved into a new home and in our master bedroom it is always really hot and stuff and i wake up all stuffed up and sometimes with bloody noses. Would a humidifer help? And what kind? hot? cold? mist? .... there are some at the health food store that put off a light cloud of mist but i dont know if they would work as good as something say from walmart.

  1. A tough question to answer yes or no without a lot more info, such as the type of climate you live in & whether this happens in the summer or winter.   You usually only need to add humidity in the winter; summertime is mostly damp enough already.  Stuffy/runny noses and bloody noses could be low humidity, or a reaction to some of the materials used in construction (if this is a brand-new house, not just new for you).  Low humidity also shows up as lots of static electric sparks off of folks' finger tips - on door k***s, each other, expensive electronics, etc. (I smoked a VCR that way once).

If you have a ducted warm air heating system, you'd be best served by a central humidifier installed at the furnace.  If you don't have any ductwork, then a portable unit will have to do.  The method it uses to evaporate the water is less important than the amount of humidity produced.  Bigger is not always better.  Research the models available as to the quantity of water evaporated, and the amount of moisture you would need for your size house to maintain about 50% relative humidity.
