Question:

What kind of ice skates should I buy for my daughter?

My daughter is in Freestyle 5. Her old skates are broken, and her instructor told us to get new ones.

I know there are lots of questions like this out there, but I can't find one that has a really good answer.

I need a figure skate that is suitable for Freestyle 5 students doing axels and other jumps and spins.

I don't really have a price limit, but I don't want it to be too expensive.

I heard Riedell was a good brand.

But I'm not sure what model would be good.

  1. Normally most good ice skating places should sell ice skates. They also usually have a fitter, which is a great benefit. There are different levels, different styles, and different purposes behind each shoe. You want to make sure you get the right size on her level for her style skating. Trust me, it makes a world of difference! So ask the fitter, and he/she should be able to find the perfect skate for your daughter.

  2. Riedell is the way to go.  I haven't bought skates in a while so I don't know the specific model but you're going to want something at least mid-line.  the boot should be very stiff.  The best thing to do is to go to a shop that sells real equipment (not sportsmart).  You will need to buy the boot and blade seperately.  It's not going to be cheap....BUT if you get a quality boot it will last her a long time.  I've had my skates for about 10 years. Check out the Riedell site.  Click on the left side...they have boot recommendations AND blade recommendations.  Check this out and go to the store with what you want in mind...that way they can't pressure you into the bells and whistles that she doesn't need.  Once you find something you like you may also want to run it by her coach.  Also keep in mind when your daughter is trying on the new boots that they are SUPER uncomfortable for the first week so the break-in process is painful.  Good luck!

add: When you do find skates you should ABSOLUTELY buy her boot covers or skate tape.  Protect the leather and those puppies will last!  Otherwise the leather will scuff quickly.

  3. ones with blades. pink prefered! if not, white!

  4. Since your daughter is in a generally high level, it's time to explore different brands for her feet. My daughter is in freestyle 3,4,5 and she has custom boots from Klingbiel. The custom boots from Klingbiel cost about $700 but require less break in time. Riedell is an excellent brand too, the silver stars, gold stars, or elite royals are good skates. My recomendation is to get her fitted and ask the fitter which skates are the best for her feet. Some boots favor narrow feet or wide feet. Good luck!

  5. idk how bout jordans

  6. Riedells are amazing. jacksons make my feet bleed and they are crappy quality sometimes. graph is good if u can spend alot. i have riedell bronze medallions, not landing my axel but theyre good for all singles.

  7. rydeils are the best and for the blade you should ask a employee at the ice rink to show you the best blade for your daughter

    !

  8. Riedell is good. I ice skate too, such a wonderful sport! Freestyle 5, what an accomplishment. Yes, Riedell. But... what brand did your daughter have before? If she is comfortable with her old brand, buy her that brand. I've stuck with Riedell all my life and it works great in competitions (I'm top in my division and in my county).

But whatever you choose, I hope it makes her excel in this wonderful sport!

  9. Well the people who told you that RIEDELLS are good really are good. And just so you know buy skates that are atleast 3 to 5 more upper levels then her current one. So for example since she is freestyle 5 I say buy skates that are maybe freestyle 7 or 8. And a great type of model for a freestyle 5

level skater is a riedell Gold Star 375 skates or maybe even an Elite Royal 900 but a Silver Star 355 is good as well. heres the link to all three of the skates
