I'm doing a fund raising bake sale, and these cupcakes are pretty neat.

I'd love to do something like them, but I noticed the icing is so clean cut, anyone know what kind of icing that is or how to make it?

here are the pics:

  1. The first picture is rolled fondant.  The second is buttercream.  I've seen the pool pall cupcakes made with rolled fondant and it looks a lot sharper.

You can buy premade fondant (which tastes bad if it's Wilton) or you can make your own.  I use marshmallow fondant.  Here's the recipe: http://whatscookingamerica.net/PegW/Fond...

It's very easy to put fondant on cupcakes.  Roll the fondant out on a lightly greased (with crisco) surface with a lightly greased rolling pin.  Cut circles of fondant with a drinking glass.  Put a smear of buttercream icing on the top of the cupcake, then put the fondant circle on and run your fingers around the edge to smooth it.  Decorate with more fondant.  You can cut fondant shapes with small cookie cutters.  To stick a piece of fondant onto another one, moisten the back of one very lightly and press them together.

Here's some of my cupcakes: http://darkmindseye.deviantart.com/galle...   The ones with the purple frosting and the bright flowers are a combination of buttercream (for the swirl, done with tip 1M) and fondant flowers that I dried overnight before I put them on the cupcakes, so they would stand out.  I painted the fondant with paste food colors.

  2. It looks likes fondant, not icing, to me.

anyways they usually use rolled fondant or marshmallow fondant. you can buy rolled fondant at your local cake supply store. marshmallow fondant can be easily made at home.

its pretty fun to do. and you can be creative with this kind of fondant type. i am making a cake for a friend next weekend using fondant. last month i made my birthday cake and everyone loved it. it was so pretty that they didn't think i made it myself. hehe.

well, i hope the fund raising bake sale will be great. with cupcakes like these.. you'll be selling a lot. have fun! take care!
