What kind of identifcation should minors take when traveling by airplane (US domestic flight)?

My brother is 13 and I'm 15, and next week we're traveling by airplane alone for the first time. I'm aware that for adults, you must show a picture ID issued by the state. But my grandfather (who should know because he flies at least once a month) says that my brother and I could bring our birth certificates just because we're minors and because our mother is going to be there to check us in and stuff before we get on the plane.

I don't think I'm above the law, and I honestly don't know the answer to my question--that's why I'm asking. I'm not an idiot--I just haven't flown without my mom or dad before. And I've never had to have an ID before this.

And, also, could our mother walk us to our gate? Would that be allowed? And am I allowed to bring food and water bottles?

  1. I don't think they will let you take food and water bottles onto the plane, but they should have food you can get on the plane.

  3. I usually get by just with my passport. Make sure you have a note from your parents, saying they're allowing you to fly alone, just in case there's any problems. There should also be contact numbers for each parent. Take a birth certificate if you're nervous.

You used to be able to be walked by your parent to the gate, but that's changed. You might be able to get her a note to go through security with you(she'll need identification, and will be subject to the same search) but it's unlikely.

You can bring food. No liquids over 100ml.
