  1. The Supremes had little impact on Detroit, and even less around the world, outside of the music industry.  Their song were popular but not particularly thought-provoking or powerful as some other Motown songs of that generation were (i.e. political overtones such as "What's Going On", "War", etc.).  In the early to mid '60s, they pumped out a continuous stream of songs that gained nationwide recognition.  In '67, the group was renamed Diana Ross and the Supremes.  Florence Ballard left the group around this time, and Diana Ross left in '70 to persue a solo career.  From '70 to '77, many singers came and went in the group, until '77 when it broke up totally.

As far as how they all got along, the Supremes were notorious for in-fighting, and Diana Ross was said to be very much the prima donna.  Interviews with former members of the group pretty well confirm this.

However, when Florence Ballard fell on hard times financially after her departure from the group, Diana Ross did offer financial assistance to avoid foreclosure of her house, and after Ballard's sudden death in '76, Ross set up trust funds for her 3 children.

I'm sure her passing saddened many people who had happy memories of the Supremes.

Sadly, she died at a young age (32) when she was in the midst of trying to reignite her career.
