What kind of insect am I?

I was found in Medoria, MT at the campgrounds. I was storing food in a hole in the ground. I appear to be metallic purple in color, very eye catching. I am about an inch to an inch and a half long, oh, and I can fly. what am I? I was thought to be a wasp/hornet, but I'm not the right color.

It is a wasp. I just can't tell from the photo what type of wasp. Maybe a blue mud wasp.
