What kind of insect is this (photo included)?

I photographed this kinda interesting creature in my garden. I though it was a crane fly, but they look a little different. I'm in central Europe.

  6. It looks like a mosquito hawk. It is a bug thats job is to kill mosquitos.

  7. It is indeed a crane or marsh fly.  It takes a pro and a good key and live specimens to id these out to species.  So if ya really want to know you'll have to take a specimen to a university.
